1. Personal crisis experience and fact finding tours in crises and war zones

One cannot teach what one has not experienced: crises have marked the life experience of L.F. Carrel, starting during his childhood as he witnessed the distress of his parents navigating a business through the crisis of the watch industry in Switzerland. The recurrent theme of crisis in his life taught him that one’s experiences are the prerequisite to deal in an authentic way with the complex subject matter “crisis”. As a basis of his research, academic work and authorship, Carrel has undertaken many fact finding tours in crisis and war zones e.g. in Asia (Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Afghanistan) the Middle and Near East (Turkey, Libanon, Syria, Jordan, Irak, Kuweit, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Egypt, Libya, Tunesia, Morocco). He investigated dangerous war zones e.g. in the war in Afghanistan (1986 and 1988) and the Gulf War (Desert Shield 1990 and Desert Storm 1991).

3. Training in crisis management

As Director of the Strategic Leadership Training Centre for the Swiss Government from 1996 until 2006, Dr. Carrel has organized, conducted and evaluated dozens of workshops, trainings and crisis exercises from the technical to the strategic level for the Swiss Government. Earlier, he was head of Strategic Training in the Swiss General Staff and Chief of Staff of a Field Division. (See PDF pictures)

In Switzerland, strategic leadership training was developed for the heads of federal ministries and the crisis staffs of the Swiss Federal Council to promote strategic thinking and decision-making in crisis times. Among the highlights of Carrel’s accomplishments as training center director  were two large strategic exercises on the national level in Switzerland 1997 (with the foresighted themes of international terrorism, cyber war, IT-revolution and risk dialog) and 2005 (with the theme worldwide pandemic and epidemic in Switzerland). Dr. Carrel has participated in large multinational and international crisis exercises (e.g. by the EU) (See PDF pictures) and, starting 2006, has conducted crisis exercises in the private sector and for global businesses. (See PDF pictures)

4. Coaching leaders in crisis situations

After many years of coaching leaders in crisis situations, we have developed a most effective and beneficial way for navigating successfully through challenging times. In the center of the learning process we promote before crises the development of self-leadership and individual leadership qualities. During the crises, leadership coaching offers professional support which enables leaders to enter into reflected and creative decision-making to attain their goals faster and more efficiently.
